M

M was created for a group typography exhibition that invited artists to explore the expressive potential of letterforms beyond the page. Our response was a sculptural interpretation of the letter M, constructed from transparent acrylic tubes arranged at varying depths.

Each tube acts as a discrete unit, yet together they form a coherent whole, echoing how letters themselves are composed of strokes, lines, and shapes that assemble into meaning. The varying depths create a dynamic surface that shifts with the viewer’s position: from one angle the M appears dense and architectural, while from another it dissolves into a delicate play of lines, light, and shadow.

By translating the flatness of typography into three-dimensional form, the work highlights the tension between function and expression. M ceases to operate solely as a character in an alphabet and instead becomes a sculptural presence—an object that asks to be looked at, walked around, and experienced physically. The tubes further enhance this transformation, capturing and refracting light, and suggesting the permeability of language itself.

In this way, M blurs the boundary between communication and abstraction. It treats the letter not only as a utilitarian mark, but as a site for exploration: where structure becomes texture, where meaning gives way to form, and where typography is no longer confined to the page but takes on the scale and resonance of sculpture.
